The University of Catania was established in 1434. It is the oldest university in Sicily.

 The Department of Physics and Astronomy (formerly: Department of Physics) has been active in both research and teaching at least since the late XIX century, as the collection of ancient instruments witnesses.

 The Department of Physics and Astronomy also hosts the following institutes:
